Case description

Helen Jefferson of Battle Creek reportedly encountered a very short visitor on three consecutive days, March 20–22,1958. The published account begins with her returning from a shop on the first afternoon when a figure about three feet tall asked to come home with her for coffee. She described pinkish-yellow skin and hair, a tan leather-like hooded coat and matching trousers. The visitor carried a wheel-like object in a light-blue, rubbery-looking bag beneath its arm. Its speech was described as guttural and broken into individual words. Jefferson became frightened when it said it had an important message and went indoors. During the longest conversation, on the third day, it reportedly said it was married but its wife was gone. Asked its origin, it uttered something she rendered as “moose” and pointed upward. Her suggestion of Mars was not clearly confirmed. A five-year-old neighbour was also said to have seen the figure. Ray Palmer’s October 1958 publication attributed the story to the Detroit group’s bulletin The Visitor. The original police record and fuller investigation remain unavailable in the retrieved sources. A later compiler labels it a hoax without presenting a demonstrated confession. No craft was reported, and the illustration does not invent one.
