Case description
Joseph Whaley, a young forestry worker, reported an encounter while cutting roadside weeds near Kinchafoonee Creek on the Bronwood–Smithville road. The newspaper-based account dates it to August 1,1955, in the afternoon. Hearing a piglike noise, he investigated and described a large gray-haired creature with pointed ears, tusks and clawed hands. He struck it with his cutting implement, then retreated to his jeep.
Whaley said it followed, tore a sleeve and scratched him as he tried to start the vehicle. He escaped through the opposite side and ran through the woods. His supervisor, ranger Jim Bowen, subsequently reported finding a trail. These observations do not establish an animal's identity.
The imported Atlas version instead gives August 3, adds a UFO and describes a stalled engine, following Mark Rodeghier's catalogue citing Orbit. Patrick Gross's comparison reproduces the earlier newspaper narrative, which contains no flying object or demonstrated engine failure. Gross proposes a wild boar; that explanation remains unproven.
The discrepancy changes the case: its best-described early form is a frightening animal encounter subsequently linked to UFO literature. A spacecraft or extraterrestrial origin should not be presented as something Whaley is known to have reported.
