Joan Frost and her friend Gertie Wynne were waiting for a bus after leaving a dance outside Jacksonville, Florida, on the night of May 9, 1956. At about 11 p.m. they noticed two flashing lights crossing the sky. The lights returned, and one appeared to enter the other before the remaining object descended toward the bus stop.
The women described a round, reddish object with lights and an opening beneath it. Joan began to run while Gertie remained watching. A bus arrived as the lower opening reportedly opened and a smaller object emerged. Driver Wallace L. Marlowe and passengers also watched the objects move away. The lack of an engine sound at such close range particularly struck the observers.
The women feared they might be taken aboard, but neither reported actually being carried into the object. Joan wrote to her father, and the account reached researcher Leonard Stringfield through that letter. The reported sequence ends with the women boarding the bus and the objects departing; their fear of an abduction should remain distinct from an account of one occurring.
