Kindley AFB red light and repeated Mach-one radar contacts — September 23 1958

At about 12:20 a.m. on September 23, 1958, the Kindley Air Force Base control-tower operator saw a red light at an estimated altitude of three to four thousand feet moving at great speed. The light remained visible for about one minute. At the same time, the radar operator detected a target that moved in several directions at a speed greater than Mach 1. It faded from the scope as though changing rapidly to a very high or very low altitude. Radar contact was regained four times over approximately seven or eight minutes.
