Case description

Shortly after midnight on October 16, 1957, twenty-three-year-old Antônio Villas-Boas was plowing a field on his family's farm near São Francisco de Sales, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The work was being done at night to avoid the heat. Villas-Boas said a red light in the sky first resembled a star, then rapidly approached and resolved into a large luminous object. He described an egg-like or elongated oval body with a rotating upper structure, a strong red light toward the front and a greenish glow around the hull. As it descended, three legs extended and the craft settled into the field. Villas-Boas tried to escape on his tractor. The machine's lights and engine reportedly failed after he had moved only a short distance, so he jumped down and ran. A small figure in a helmet and grey coveralls caught him. After a struggle, three more figures joined the first and carried him toward the craft. Their speech sounded to him like animal yelps or growls, and their faces remained hidden behind helmet equipment. He was taken up a short ladder through a hatch marked by unfamiliar red symbols. Inside, the beings removed his clothes and covered his body with a clear or oily substance. They took a blood sample from beneath his chin, leaving small punctures or marks. He was then left alone in a room into which a gas entered. Villas-Boas said the odor made him violently ill and that he vomited. After the room cleared, an adult female humanoid entered. He described her as short, pale, with very light hair, large slanted blue eyes, high cheekbones and other broadly human features. The encounter became sexual. The Atlas records it as alleged non-consensual sexual contact within a claimed abduction; the portrait does not eroticize or depict the act. Afterward, Villas-Boas interpreted one of the woman's gestures as indicating that a child would result and be raised elsewhere. The helmeted figures returned, gave him back his clothing and led him through part of the craft. He reportedly tried to take a small clock-like or box-like device as proof but was prevented. He was then escorted down the ladder. From the field he watched the landing legs retract, the upper section rotate faster and the craft rise, glow intensely and depart at high speed. He estimated that more than four hours had passed. In the following days and weeks, Villas-Boas reported weakness, nausea, headaches, burning eyes, appetite loss and skin lesions. He later contacted journalist João Martins after reading a request for UFO witnesses. Martins brought him to physician and UFO researcher Dr. Olavo Fontes in Rio de Janeiro, where Villas-Boas gave a long statement and underwent a medical examination in February 1958. Fontes documented marks and symptoms and interpreted some of them as compatible with radiation exposure, but the surviving material does not establish a measured dose, environmental sample or independent medical cause. The case became one of the earliest widely circulated modern abduction narratives. Unlike many later accounts, Villas-Boas told the central sequence without hypnotic regression. That does not establish that it occurred as described. He was the sole witness to the claimed boarding; no craft photograph or recovered device exists; the exact publication history is complicated; and researchers have debated whether contemporary science-fiction and contactee stories influenced the narrative. Reported ground indentations and clinical notes add documentary texture but do not independently verify an extraterrestrial cause. The Atlas portrait therefore centers on the best-defined public scene: the farmer, stalled tractor, landed three-legged egg-shaped craft and four helmeted figures. The alleged interior events appear only as a restrained secondary montage. Every human and mechanical detail is presented as a reconstruction of Villas-Boas's account, not as a photograph or an assertion that the claim was proven.
