Case description
A newspaper dispatch datelined Marion, Indiana, April 14, 1897, placed an unusual aerial visitor near Gas City at about three in the afternoon. The report said it approached rapidly from the northwest, initially resembling an immense bird. As it drew closer, observers supposedly distinguished a cigar-shaped body and broad wings. This is a period airship account, rather than an original description of a modern disc-shaped UFO.
According to the dispatch printed in the Chicago Chronicle the following day, the machine came down on John Roush's farm about a mile south of Gas City. The Roush family was frightened, horses and cattle scattered, and six people left the craft. Their actions looked to the distant observers like adjustments to its mechanism. Before the approaching townspeople could get within calling distance, the object rose and departed eastward. The article described considerable excitement and people running toward the farm.
The account does not supply close observations of the crew's faces, clothing, or biology, nor a documented conversation. Calling them extraterrestrials would add something the contemporary report does not establish. The plate depicts a speculative winged airship and six indistinct, human-proportioned crew figures in the reported farm setting. It represents a newspaper claim from the 1897 airship wave; surviving publication of that claim is not verification of a landing.
