Springfield entity encounter — April 15, 1897

An April 1897 Springfield airship story placed an encounter west of the Illinois city, near the Jefferson Street road. A newspaper-based historical review identifies the witnesses as vineyard owner Adolf Wenke and farmhand John Halley; later UFO catalogues give variants such as Adolph Winkle and John Hulle. Those spelling differences belong to the transmission of the story, rather than establishing separate encounters. According to the tale, the men came upon an extraordinary aerial machine and a long-bearded man who asked where he was. He represented himself as an inventor travelling with another man and the scientist's wife, who remained in the car. Large wings supposedly made daytime travel conspicuous. Asked his identity, the inventor pointed to an M painted on the vehicle instead of supplying a name. He then operated a button and departed. Later catalogue versions attach April 15 and additional travel or repair details, but the contemporary reporting already treated the story skeptically. The Illinois State Register's April 16 coverage explicitly conveyed disbelief. The episode belongs to the 1896–97 American mystery-airship press wave, where alleged secret inventors were common motifs. It describes human occupants, not distinctly nonhuman beings; neither a surviving machine nor an independently authenticated inventor has been established by the cited reporting.
