Case description
A brief newspaper item during the 1897 airship wave attributed an extraordinary encounter to Haney Savidge of Downs Township, Illinois. While working in a field, he reportedly saw an aerial machine descend nearby. Six people got out, stayed for a short conversation, then returned aboard. The object rose and went away.
The Chicago Times-Herald published the claim on April 17 in a dispatch datelined Bloomington, April 16. Crucially, its wording places Savidge's experience on an unspecified day that week. April 16 is therefore an approximate catalogue date, not a recorded day of encounter. The item supplies neither the conversation nor a description of the machine or its occupants.
The dispatch also collects distant observations from several states. Those neighboring reports do not establish that Savidge's landing occurred, and their rectangular craft descriptions cannot automatically be assigned to his machine. It also mentions a constructed airship display and an astronomical explanation elsewhere.
The surviving account is a contemporary press claim within a noisy mixture of sightings, speculation and jokes. It does not identify nonhuman beings, provide an inspected airship, or document an investigation of Savidge. An illustration can show the reported meeting, but its machinery and clothing necessarily remain contextual reconstruction.
