Case description

During the April 1897 airship press wave, a story from Josserand described farmer Frank Nichols hearing machinery near midnight. He reportedly saw brilliant lights on a large, oddly proportioned vessel resting in his field. As he went to investigate, two ordinary men carrying buckets asked to draw water from his well. He agreed and was invited to approach their vessel. The newspaper narrative says Nichols spoke with a crew of six or eight. One claimed that aerial navigation had been solved using a newly discovered, self-supporting material and highly concentrated electricity. Five machines supposedly had been built in Iowa, with a company forming to make them widely available. These statements are part of the airship story’s inventor narrative, not verified engineering claims. An accessible transcription attributes the article to the Houston Post of 26 April 1897 and calls the field corn, whereas the imported record gives 22 April and wheat. Other historical compilations supply differing publication chronology. Month-level artwork avoids false precision. The report describes human crewmen and no clear craft outline; it does not support alien faces or a specific saucer or dirigible design. The broader wave included newspaper invention and hoaxes, but that context alone does not prove who originated this particular account.
