Case description
The catalogue places Judge Lawrence A. Byrne’s reported encounter at McKinney Bayou, Arkansas, on April 23, 1897. Byrne, associated with Texarkana, was said to be surveying land when he came upon an unusual object anchored or resting in an opening in the thicket. Three men stood near it, speaking a language he did not recognize.
The surviving wording uses a dated ethnic comparison to describe their appearance. That records Byrne’s or the reporter’s impression; it does not establish nationality, identity or nonhuman origin. A fuller INTCAT version says the men beckoned him forward and showed him machinery inside, described as aluminium. Their explanation involved gas being pumped into and released from an aluminium tank. The compact source does not supply a reliable plan of the airship or a technical demonstration.
This belongs to the 1897 newspaper airship tradition, in which alleged crews were commonly portrayed as human inventors. The source trail leads to later collections by Lucius Farish and others rather than an independently preserved flight record. Neither an extraterrestrial interpretation nor a case-specific hoax finding has been established from the material reviewed here. The plate shows a Victorian surveyor, three ordinarily dressed human crewmen and an illustrative anchored airship, avoiding caricature or invented alien anatomy.
