Case description
This entry summarizes a regional series in eastern Papua during 1959, rather than a single landing. Hatch gives sixty-two reports, with eighteen at Boianai, thirteen at Baniara, seven at Ruabapain and six at Dagura, plus reports elsewhere. Similar totals appear in published accounts of Reverend Norman Cruttwell’s collection. They should not be read as sixty-two objects observed simultaneously or sixty-two encounters with occupants.
The best-known subset occurred at Boianai on June 26–27. Reverend William Gill and members of the mission community reported a luminous object with humanlike figures on top. On the second evening Gill and teacher Ananias Rarata waved and thought the figures returned their gestures. The wider series included quite different observations: Ernie Evenett described a football-shaped object with illuminated portholes near Giwa on June 26, while Baniara observers recorded distant lights and changing colors. Occupants were not reported in every case.
Australian government files preserve correspondence about Papuan sightings and their evaluation. Keith Basterfield’s archival review distinguishes the handling of Gill’s material from other regional reports; official interest did not establish extraterrestrial origin. Published totals also vary with the period and inclusion criteria used. The plate selects the Boianai waving account as a clearly labeled representative episode, while the record remains an aggregate. It does not transfer that episode’s beings or craft design to every sighting.
