Case description
Eight-year-old Darcelle Nolan, a second-grade pupil at St. Joseph School, and nine-year-old Diane Pearson reported an unusual sight while travelling by school bus along Broadway in Ayers Village, Haverhill, on the morning of 17 December 1959. According to the Haverhill Journal account reproduced by Loren E. Gross, they saw a bright flash in a nearby field, followed by a round, silvery object with a dome landing there.
A door opened, and something wearing light-coloured clothes came out. Darcelle said four children on the bus had seen the object. Her mother told the newspaper that she initially doubted the story but believed her daughter after hearing it. That was a parent's assessment of the child's account, rather than an additional eyewitness observation. No face, height, conversation or subsequent departure is described.
The newspaper reference is dated 18 December 1959. Gross's section heading mistakenly says Maine, although his reference identifies the Haverhill, Massachusetts, Journal and the named locality fits Massachusetts. Later catalogue summaries omit the children's names and clothing detail, making the account seem much sparser. The reconstruction preserves the bus, silver dome and light-clothed figure while treating facial appearance, portraits, landscape and precise distance as artistic.
