Case description
An April 1960 press report claimed that a luminous object came down near Beira, Mozambique, then Portuguese East Africa. The Atlas preserves only the month; Vallée’s later catalogue gives April 5. Contemporary APRO and Flying Saucer Review items traced the story to the Portuguese Lusitania agency and Lisbon newspapers of April 7.
Residents allegedly saw an orange, round object crossing the sky with a sharp whistling sound. It landed, and four small human-shaped figures ran toward the woods before it exploded with a loud concussion. APRO repeated a claim that hundreds of residents watched. That number was not supported by named statements or an independently documented witness count. Faces, clothing, viewing distances and time of day remain unrecorded.
Flying Saucer Review obtained its version through the Times of India and explicitly asked readers for further information, saying it could find no other report. The different publications therefore preserve a contemporary press chain, not several independently investigated encounters. Neither the original Lusitania dispatch nor authenticated wreckage or a crash investigation was retrieved here. Later authors supply little additional verifiable detail. The plate uses an April-only title and a clearly contextual moment before the alleged explosion; its representative observers and indistinct figures are not documented portraits, and the account remains a historical claim rather than a verified extraterrestrial crash.
