Case description
Madame C. J., whose surname was withheld, reported seeing an unusual object while hanging laundry on her third-floor balcony at Bellechasse and Saint-Denis in Montréal. The event is dated 31 May 1962, shortly after 21:00. Wido Hoville's UFO Quebec article, based on his 1972 visit to her, gives a mild, clear evening and a viewing distance she estimated at about 150 metres. Her family was inside and did not share the initial observation.
She described a vertical barrel about 2.8 metres high and two metres across, colored something like ketchup red and marked with dark grooves. It moved slowly and silently along a gently curved path, approximately twenty to thirty metres above ground. Two round portholes, described as opposite one another, allegedly revealed two very pale figures wearing white astronaut-like clothing. After a minute or two the object disappeared behind the former Sainte-Justine hospital area. When she called her family to the balcony, it was already gone.
Calls to neighbors and acquaintances failed to recover another view. Hoville writes that the witness still felt troubled by the ridicule her story attracted, and had repeatedly drawn or made representations of its shape. Those memories and models are not contemporary photographs of the event. The plate's two windows are made simultaneously readable through an explicitly labeled artistic composite; it does not claim to resolve the viewing geometry of two ports reportedly situated 180 degrees apart.
