Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
At about 20:00 on August 19, 1962, twelve-year-old Raimundo Aleluia Mafra and his father, Rivalino Mafra da Silva, were beside a small fire in their isolated home at Duas Pontes, in the Diamantina district of Minas Gerais. Two younger children were asleep nearby. The lamps were out, and the house and surrounding countryside were dark.
Raimundo said his father called attention to a shadowy form moving silently through the kitchen. The boy could make out four legs and a projection near what seemed to be its head, but not a clear outline. Rivalino went to investigate and found nothing. Raimundo later acknowledged that fear and darkness might have influenced what they thought they saw.
The unease continued through the night. Father and son reportedly heard threatening voices calling Rivalino by name and a sound compared to a purring cat. They remained awake until morning. Those nocturnal impressions were never tied to a visible speaker, and the later investigators did not present them as independently verified events.
At approximately 06:00 on August 20, Raimundo opened the kitchen door to fetch his father's mount. A few metres from the house, he said, were two small oval objects, each only about 40–50 centimetres along its longer dimension and fitted with a short tubular projection underneath. One was matte black; the other carried alternating black-and-white transverse stripes. They stood about a metre apart.
Rivalino came to the doorway and told his son to stay back. The projections under the objects appeared to have turned away from the men. Holding an ordinary stone, the father stepped into the yard and approached. Raimundo then saw the two objects join sideways with a muffled sound and begin rotating rapidly.
A cloud of yellow dust rose around Rivalino but did not reach the boy in the doorway. When it cleared, Raimundo said, both his father and the joined objects were gone. He did not see his father enter a craft and did not describe a visible departure. He searched nearby and then went for help.
The account says a neighbour noticed an apparently swept circular area and that police searches, including tracking dogs, did not locate Rivalino. Another local resident's earlier report of two circling lights was recorded separately and should not be treated as an eyewitness view of the disappearance itself.
On August 30, Raimundo gave a detailed interview later summarized by the civilian investigative group CICOANI. Their six-page account, dated September 10, 1968 and signed by Guilherme Pereira, also describes medical, judicial and other interviews and includes a site plan. Its preservation in Brazil's national archival custody strengthens the document's provenance, but government custody does not convert the civilian investigation into official confirmation.
A March 1963 newspaper report said hunters had found a skeleton near the home. The CICOANI author questioned both the identification and the circumstances, but the surviving account provides no forensic findings that settle whether the remains were Rivalino's. The Atlas therefore does not claim that an alien abduction or death was proven. It records a child's detailed account of his father's unexplained disappearance in association with unusual objects.
The portrait reconstructs the decisive dawn moment exactly at the scale described: Raimundo remains in the doorway while Rivalino, holding a stone, approaches two very small contrasting oval objects that have joined and begun raising yellow dust. It shows no occupants, beam, conventional saucer or later skeleton. It is an illustrative reconstruction, not a photograph of the event.
