Case description
Schoolteacher Ellen Sylvester and her children reportedly observed an orange light on the ground near Salisbury, South Australia, in October 1962. Hatch and Keith Basterfield’s catalogue give October 28 at about 7:30 p.m. Another published retelling uses October 23. The estimated distance was considerable, around three to four kilometres.
The adult’s observation was essentially an orange glow. Her son insisted that he could distinguish an oval object with windows, supporting legs and two men. Other retellings elaborate this into a landing with an occupant attending to a leg. Those details are not equivalent to the teacher independently resolving the same features at that distance. The source distinction is the central point of this entry: family members reported differing amounts of visual information.
Basterfield cites the Australian Flying Saucer Research Society and Australian Saucer Record. The accessible catalogue does not establish an independently examined landing trace or a clear occupant description. Similar later Adelaide-area accounts should not be merged simply because they also involve children and a field. The plate uses a distant glow and very small suggested details, with a caption explaining that the purported legs, windows and figures belong to the children’s report rather than adult confirmation.
