Case description
This record represents a regional scare around Boskloof and Clanwilliam in April–May 1963, rather than one precisely dated encounter. Flying Saucer Review reproduced a Johannesburg Sunday Times report of May 5, supplied by Philipp J. Human. Farmers were watching lights while stones and unexplained thumps were reported at a house occupied by J. Smit on Herman Nieuwoudt’s farm.
E. H. Nieuwoudt described a roughly twelve-foot-wide, ten-foot-high object that rose and moved rapidly towards a plantation. Hans Bagger reportedly saw another hovering object the following evening. Mrs. G. E. Nieuwoudt described repeated moonlike appearances. Other reports concerned cattle frightened by red lights, dogs disturbed by noises and unspecified ghostly figures on farms.
A large gathering at Smit’s house illustrates the atmosphere of alarm. Police investigated the noises; Sergeant J. A. Jacobs reported hearing three thumps and suggested roof contraction as a possible explanation. The newspaper did not establish a common cause linking lights, animal behaviour and house disturbances.
The imported abstract compresses this wave into one record. There is no detailed alien anatomy or witnessed movement of figures into a craft. The plate is explicitly a regional composite, with ambiguous distant forms rather than invented extraterrestrial faces.
