Case description
The Cape Girardeau crash story entered the documented UFO literature through Charlette Mann’s 1991 letters to Leonard Stringfield, roughly fifty years after the alleged event. Mann said her grandfather, Baptist minister William Guy Huffman, had been summoned to a crash outside town one spring night in 1941. She learned the story through family members rather than witnessing it or receiving a contemporaneous report.
In the family account, Huffman encountered a broken, rounded metallic object and three small, nonhuman bodies already laid on the ground. They were described as large-headed, hairless and covered in wrinkled metallic-looking material. He reportedly prayed over them and was told by a military officer to remain silent. Mann also described a family photograph that had subsequently been lent out and lost. No surviving photograph has substantiated that description.
The source chain is third-hand and lacks contemporary crash, police or military confirmation. A later archival investigation raised a significant chronological problem: Huffman reportedly did not move to Cape Girardeau until November 1941. Suggestions of a mistaken season or year do not supply a replacement documented date. Later embellishments, including a surviving occupant or Catholic-style last rites, are not treated as part of the original letter. The plate expressly identifies the later family account and disputed date.
