Case description
The Burgh Marsh entry concerns the photograph known as the Solway or Cumberland Spaceman. Firefighter Jim Templeton photographed his five-year-old daughter Elizabeth during a family outing near Burgh by Sands in May 1964. His later first-person account gives May 23; some retellings use May 24 or incorrectly call May 23 a Sunday. He said the middle of three developed pictures unexpectedly contained a pale figure behind her.
Templeton did not report seeing an astronaut or a craft while taking the picture. The interpretation arose afterward from a light-coloured torso and helmetlike head shape. Reports that the film showed no manipulation do not identify the person or establish that an unusual being was present. Other photographs from the outing show his wife Annie nearby.
David Clarke proposed that Annie entered the frame unnoticed, with her back toward the camera and her pale blue dress appearing white through exposure. James Conrad disputes aspects of that explanation; neither position is a new eyewitness observation. Later stories about mysterious visitors and a Woomera missile test became attached to the image. Clarke and Andy Roberts found no contemporary record establishing matching spacemen at the launch, and identified the widely discussed launch-film anomaly as a lens reflection. The plate consequently illustrates the photographic occasion and an ambiguous background silhouette, without inventing a witnessed encounter.
