Case description

Rafael Aguirre Donoso reported meeting two men beside a small aircraft inland from Arica in June 1964. The account entered Gordon Creighton's South American survey and Vallée's landing catalogue. Some versions date it June 15; later correspondence cited by Chilean researcher Diego Zúñiga gives June 19. The witness is also variously described as a miner and a ship's watchman. The basic sequence is straightforward. Donoso was driving when he encountered a machine estimated at three metres long and one metre wide. Two normal-looking, light-skinned men asked for water. In one telling they spoke a mixture of English and Spanish; another says they first used English and then changed to Spanish. Donoso supplied water from his car's radiator, after which the men departed in their machine. Neither unusual anatomy nor an abduction is part of the reported encounter. Later descriptions add astronaut-like clothing and an object on top of the vehicle, but its structure remains poorly documented. Patrick Gross has proposed that an ordinary light helicopter and its crew could account for the essentials; that is an explanatory hypothesis, not an established identification. The original newspaper report has not been recovered within the source comparison. The plate therefore keeps the men human and the small vehicle's outline partially obscured, without resolving it into a detailed spacecraft.
