Case description
The Sledge family reportedly experienced this event in Escondido, California, during November 1943. Barry Greenwood's UFO Historical Revue account, reproduced by Project 1947, places it around 10:30 p.m. on a dark moonless night. The husband, wife and son were listening to the radio when Mrs Sledge stepped outside and noticed an object above the house.
She described a disc roughly 12 feet across with a dome hovering about 15 feet above the roof. Square windows surrounded the dome, whose interior appeared chrome-like. Behind two windows she saw shapes resembling men, without facial or anatomical detail. Thinking an aircraft might be in trouble, she fetched her husband; he and their son also watched the object. A faint humming sound accompanied it.
Mrs Sledge shone a flashlight on the ground because she thought the object might want to land. Its lights then went out and it disappeared from view. The family reportedly kept the account private for many years. The 1998 publication consequently does not constitute contemporary wartime documentation or establish how the disappearance occurred. The plate shows the family and two indistinct window silhouettes during the lit phase; it adds no occupants outside the object, detailed alien faces, or exact Novemberday unsupported by the source.
