Case description
Three young women driving along Belmont Road in Grand Forks reportedly stopped near Lincoln Park golf course at about 11:30 p.m. after noticing what looked like an unusually large yellow moon. They then saw the actual moon behind them. A newspaper account reproduced in later research identifies Sylvia Hoffman and companions whose names vary between retellings. The event’s date also varies: August 8, 9 and 10, 1965 appear in catalogues; the quoted newspaper’s reference to Sunday points toward August 8, while August 10 may be a publication date.
Hoffman described the object as circular and transparent, blinking between black and white. She said small figures were visible inside but could not be distinguished clearly. Another witness described only a moving silhouette in the pale-yellow glow. These statements support ambiguous internal shapes, not detailed descriptions of occupants, clothing or faces.
Three men in another car and two young people with a motorcycle were also said to have watched. One young person reportedly ran toward the object while a motorcycle light shone in its direction. The women’s account of the ending included information supplied by the other observers: the object appeared to disappear or “blow up” with a bang. No recovered debris or established explosion investigation accompanies that wording.
Jacques Vallée and later HUMCAT-derived catalogues retained the case, but discrepancies in dates, names and witness totals remain. The illustration uses August 1965, showing the initial group watching indistinct silhouettes within a moonlike luminous circle.
