Near Arequipa, Peru being encounter — August 31, 1965

An unusual roadside report near Arequipa, Peru, circulated in newspapers at the end of August 1965. Two men driving on the Pan-American Highway, about 20 kilometres from the city, reportedly encountered an approximately 80-centimetre figure. The Atlas uses August 31, but that is also the publication date of cited newspapers rather than a securely established encounter date. The August version describes a dark, shrub-like form with a golden eye in its upper portion and several smaller eye-like features elsewhere. A saucer was reportedly seen overhead a few seconds afterward. Later versions identify the men as Julio L. de Romaña, with spelling variants, and Antonio Chávez Bedoya. Another account dated September 29 describes metallic-looking strips and a single eye; these details should not simply be added to the earlier morphology. Gordon Creighton discussed the reports in The Humanoids, and subsequent catalogues repeated differing versions. Claims of police or editorial checks are not equivalent to an independently inspected evidentiary file. The plate follows the August description of the compact shrub-like figure. Because the overhead object appeared afterward, its inclusion in the same scene is explicitly labelled a sequential composite. Fine vehicle and anatomical details remain uncertain.
