Case description
Betty Valdone and her twelve-year-old son Robbie reportedly saw an unusual object over Rio Vista, California, during an evening in 1965. The account circulated under October 4, although that may be its reporting date rather than the precise observation date. Later catalogues also spell the surname Valine.
Robbie was said to have noticed it first. His mother described a large, round, plate-like object with a dome, visible for a short time in bright glare associated with a searchlight. Three people could reportedly be seen at its windows. She thought the object appeared to be descending and fairly close, but did not give a dependable speed. Neither witness saw it touch the ground. No exposed facial anatomy, clothing description or interaction with the occupants is preserved in the short report.
Vallée included the case in Passport to Magonia, citing Flying Saucer Review; newspaper-clipping compilations and NICAP subsequently repeated it. References to the particular FSR volume are inconsistent in later sources, and the earliest article has not been securely identified here. The native date is retained with that limitation. The plate shows the mother and son, the airborne disc and three indistinct interior figures rather than inventing a landing or recognisable alien appearance.
