Case description
Annabelle Randall's Heytesbury report concerns two journeys with different witness coverage. On the outward trip she and her fiancé John Plowman noticed a human-shaped figure slumped beside the road near a railway bridge. After stopping and searching for about twelve minutes, they found nobody. Plowman considered the possibility of a soldier from the nearby camp. No injured person was established.
After taking him home, Randall returned alone around 12:25 a.m. She described an orange light near the railway embankment, dimming headlights and a coughing engine. A dark circular object was reportedly beside the road. The orange object moved in front of her car with red and blue sparks and a crimson glow, then flew away; her engine stopped and subsequently restarted. She also reported two human-like men wearing black balaclavas and dark glossy, diver-like clothing. Their noses and eyes were visible, and she narrowly avoided them while driving on.
The date is inconsistent across the source chain. The Atlas assigns the early hours of October 8, 1965, while other catalogues use October 7 or 9 and Shuttlewood's earlier book gives August 7. The plate therefore uses the year only. The man's earlier roadside appearance, the two later men and the unusual objects were interpreted as connected, but that connection was not demonstrated. Randall's solitary return-trip observations should not be credited to Plowman.
