Case description
The imported Mattoon entry follows Jacques Vallée’s Magonia catalogue in describing a mysterious man at windows, an allegedly disabling device and a sweet or cloying smell in late August 1944. It contains no reported spacecraft and no distinct nonhuman anatomy. This is a later UFO-related retelling of the “phantom gasser” episode, rather than a conventional landing-and-occupants account.
The historical newspaper panic itself is well documented. University of Illinois and Eastern Illinois University archives preserve contemporary reporting from the first half of September 1944: residents complained of sweet smells, nausea and temporary difficulty moving, while some reported a person near their windows. Police increased patrols, residents kept watch, and no identified perpetrator was established. Contemporary explanations included industrial fumes and anxiety-driven reports; later researchers continued to debate the interpretation.
A corrective distinction is essential. The imported NICAP note says no newspaper reports could be found and suggests the story was invented much later. That cannot accurately describe the entire Mattoon panic, for which newspaper coverage survives. It may reflect doubts about the specific consciousness-dissolving device or UFO reinterpretation, neither of which the contemporary coverage establishes. The plate therefore depicts a cautiously labelled human-prowler retelling with no craft, visible gas, alien physiology or assertion that an actual attacker has been proven.
