Wallace Mothman and dog report — November 15, 1966
WALLACE, WVA, Western Virginia, United States
Open this case in the interactive AtlasCase description
On November 15, 1966, two young couples driving near the abandoned World War II munitions area outside Point Pleasant, West Virginia, reported a large figure beside the road. The Atlas locality is inherited as Wallace, West Virginia, reflecting inconsistent cataloguing within the wider regional story.
The witnesses described a tall gray or dark humanoid with broad folded wings and two large red reflective eyes. They said it moved or flew after their car as they left the area. Police searched but found no creature.
Other residents soon reported lights, strange animals and red-eyed figures. Journalist John Keel later connected the sightings with broader paranormal events and the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse, but no evidence establishes that the reports caused or predicted the disaster.
Large owls, sandhill cranes, misperception and social contagion have been proposed. The witnesses' fear and consistent central image made the story endure, while later mythology greatly expanded it.
CE3 is retained for the close being report. The portrait shows the figure at a distance with wings folded and no attack. It is an illustrative reconstruction.
