Case description
The Athens digest describes a small visitor asking directions and becoming fascinated by a ballpoint pen in January 1967. A closely matching fuller story appears in John Keel's account of reporter Mary Hyre, whose newspaper was the Athens Messenger. Keel places her workplace opposite a county courthouse, rather than inside one. The apparent match suggests that the digest may have conflated the newspaper's name with the scene; the precise relationship to Hans Holzer's cited version remains unverified.
Hyre reportedly described a man about four feet six inches tall, wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt, thin blue trousers, thick-soled shoes and heavy glasses despite cold weather. He had a square-cut black hairstyle, stared intently and asked directions to Welch, West Virginia. His disjointed account of travelling from Detroit and his approach toward her desk made her uneasy. She fetched the circulation manager, who joined the conversation. While she answered the telephone, the visitor examined her pen. She offered it to him; he allegedly laughed strangely and ran outside.
The next day Hyre asked the sheriff's office about an explanation, without obtaining one. Her account describes unusual human behavior, not a witnessed extraterrestrial arrival, a craft or demonstrated nonhuman anatomy. Keel's narrative and the compressed courthouse listing should not be silently treated as independent corroboration. The plate labels the probable source match, uses the fuller office setting and keeps the visitor human-looking, rather than adding a saucer, uniformed official or alien face.
