Sauvigny-Ls-Bois, FR being encounter — February 5, 1967

Around 21:45–21:50 on 5 February 1967, members of a family at Sauvigny-le-Bois, Yonne, noticed a bright light near the cemetery opposite their home. In the later reconstruction, Jeanne and her 17-year-old daughter Marie-Solange first noticed it, while the girl's grandfather Louis watched from the adjoining house. Louis initially compared the lights with a vehicle. The witnesses then described a red, elongated object approaching their vegetable garden, with a white bar-like light beneath it and short, crackling orange or yellow jets at its ends. The grandmother went indoors during the approach, and Marie-Solange briefly went inside to call her back. Louis alone claimed to see a small figure beside the object for only two or three seconds. It appeared shiny gray or metallic and roughly one metre tall; separate arms and legs were not discernible in his later description. He did not observe it actually emerging from the object. When Marie-Solange returned, the figure was gone. The object subsequently appeared more ball-like, rose and departed toward the southwest. No corresponding ground damage or physiological effect was established. The reporting history matters: the first located newspaper account is from September 1969, followed by GEPA's investigation and a GEPAN re-investigation in 1978. Accounts differ on dimensions, duration and some details. Louis was about 69 in 1967, rather than 49 as some summaries imply. A published critical examination compares these changes and challenges extraordinary interpretations. The family testimony documents a reported event, while neither its interpretation as a spacecraft nor the figure's nature is independently established.
