Case description
A young man and his girlfriend reported an unusual encounter while parked in Epping Forest near Chingford in August 1967. Around 11:30 p.m. they noticed a small stationary red light. It faded, then a brighter red flare appeared to rise from the trees, accompanied by scattered lights or sparks that seemed to bounce about. In that illumination they described two very small figures approximately seventy-five yards away.
The figures were estimated at between one and a half and three feet tall. They appeared to wear long white raincoats or mackintoshes that concealed their legs, and had round heads without discernible features at the viewing distance. A glowing oval light then moved in a zigzag fashion toward the car, reportedly coming within about six feet. The driver tried the ignition several times before the engine finally started and the couple drove away.
A man at a nearby cottage reportedly also saw lights, but he was not said to have observed the figures. Police suggested fireworks, and no physical traces were reported. The HUMCAT entry cites Barry King's investigation, later published in BUFORA material, and Jenny Randles's account in Official UFO. The moving lights are not enough to establish a mechanical spacecraft, and this case should remain separate from King's own different Chingford encounter in 1974.
