Case description

On the morning of September 14, 1967, sixteen-year-old Fabio José Diniz crossed or approached a football field at La Baleia in Brazil. The surviving catalogue accounts disagree over whether the time was about 9:00 or 11:00 a.m., but they agree that the encounter occurred in daylight. In the middle of the field, Diniz noticed an object unlike anything normally found there: a brown, mushroom-shaped structure roughly sixty feet across, with a shallow dome above a flat underside and a short central pillar supporting the center. Round portholes ringed the edge, while red, yellow and blue lights flashed beneath the dome. Diniz moved closer. As he approached, a glass-like screen or transparent curtain reportedly descended from the rim of the dome to the ground. At nearly the same moment, an opening appeared at the base of the central column. Two exceptionally tall figures—described as nearly seven feet in height—emerged through it. They were covered from head to foot in tight green garments resembling divers' suits. The helmet and clothing appeared to form a single piece. Only the upper part of each face remained visible: greenish skin, large round eyes set widely apart and triangular eyebrows. The nose and mouth were hidden. A thin tube ran from each helmet down through the suit toward the back, and one figure carried a large cylindrical implement against his arm. The figures addressed Diniz in Portuguese. One told him not to run and called for him to return. While one of the pair walked completely around the central column, the other issued a more disturbing instruction: Diniz was to appear at the field the following day, or, according to the published account, his family would be taken. The record does not describe a physical attack or an attempt to pull him inside. After delivering the message, both figures went back through the opening. The transparent curtain retracted, and the object began rotating as it rose slowly in a vertical ascent. Investigators later examined the site. The HUMCAT summary reports a small amount of scorched, granular material with an unpleasant odor and says analysis identified iron, aluminum, magnesium and silica. Diniz returned to the field the next day with investigators, as the figures had directed, but no object appeared. Dr. Húlvio B. Aleixo investigated the report for CICOANI in Belo Horizonte and published a two-part account in Flying Saucer Review.
