Case description
Radio technician Ugo Battaglia, thirty-nine, and his fourteen-year-old assistant Carlos Alberto do Nascimento were repairing a record player in an eighth-floor apartment on Rua Gomes Carneiro, Rio de Janeiro, around 2:30 p.m. on November 24, 1967. Carlos heard a high-pitched sound and saw a metallic disc descending toward the opposite hillside. He said it struck a tree, scattering leaves, before hovering close to the ground.
Three figures emerged underneath and walked side by side, with arms hanging stiffly. Carlos described white coveralls; Battaglia thought they were yellow. A rotating upper cupola had slatlike openings, with red lights underneath. After about five minutes the figures disappeared beneath the object. When the technicians left the building around 2:55, it was still visible; at a later corner it was gone. They did not observe its departure.
The next day they visited the site with a colleague and found flattened grass and a damaged, apparently scorched tree. Samples were reportedly sent to APRO, but no final laboratory result was verified. Carlos thought the figures had been only knee-deep in grass that would have covered an ordinary person, an impression rather than a measured height.
Irene Granchi’s original APRO report says Carlos suffered a headache and Battaglia had no adverse effects. Some later summaries reverse that attribution and import miner-style headgear from a different case in the same issue. The plate follows the original account and preserves the indirect hillside viewpoint.
