Case description

Three fourteen-year-old girls at a sports camp near Lake Kaarna, outside Otepää, described an unusual night during July 1968. According to Jüri Lina’s later interviews, they first watched a moving light appear to approach a cigar-shaped object. From their cabin they subsequently saw a brilliant, bus-sized mass near the trees, with orange-yellow rays and then a blue-green glow that illuminated the woodland. A buzzing sound accompanied the display before it disappeared. Only after the object had gone did one girl, looking outside near the cabin, report a small female-like figure approximately 1.4–1.5 metres tall. She recalled a shining silver strip across its chest; the figure was briefly visible and then vanished. The following morning the girls said they found a burned circular area and wedge-shaped impressions, together with a longer disturbed track. Lina recorded an anonymous witness interview in May 1977 and inspected the site. He found discrepancies in recalled distances and the length of the alleged track. Some relatives and camp-associated adults remembered the girls’ story, while coaches did not recall it. His article appeared in Flying Saucer Review in 1978. The night is variously dated July 20 or 21, and the figure was not independently identified as an occupant. The illustration explicitly compresses the reported sequence.
