MT. AIRY, NC, North Carolina, United States
Case description
Mrs Harold B. Eggers described an unusual night at her Buck Shoals Road home near Mount Airy during July or August 1968. Around 2:30 a.m., her dog barked and scratched at the door while a loud buzzing like a swarm of bees sounded outside. After she opened the door, the dog retreated indoors and hid beneath a bed with its paws over its ears. She saw a luminous, broad-rimmed object hovering near the house.
She estimated the object at about fifteen feet across and six or seven feet high, roughly ninety feet away and fifty feet above ground. Its profile resembled a Chinese hat, with a dome and a ring of approximately twelve square windows glowing red-orange. Light from its lower surface illuminated the surroundings. Watching through a window after closing the door, she reported a small occupant, about three or four feet tall, wearing a silver suit and helmet.
The object reportedly moved across the road toward woodland and remained in the area for about twenty-five minutes. Eggers associated the episode with dimmed house lights, clocks showing a discrepancy of roughly an hour, and subsequent headaches, poor sleep and impaired vision. Those are witness-reported effects, not demonstrated causes. The account appeared several years later in Skylook and related publications. “Summer 1968” preserves the uncertain month more accurately than assigning a definite August day.
