Case description
This record concerns Itaipu Beach in the Niterói area of Rio de Janeiro, rather than the later Itaipu hydroelectric complex. The HUMCAT entry dates it September 9, 1968, and describes beach witnesses seeing an orange luminous disc make several passes and briefly land. Professor Sohail Saud was identified as one observer who reported helmeted occupants visible inside the object.
Other observers reportedly saw it hover about ten metres above the water while turning about its axis and producing a humming sound. The available account separates these observations rather than providing a single minute-by-minute statement signed by all witnesses. It does not establish how many helmeted figures Saud saw, nor does it describe their faces, anatomy or clothing beneath the helmets. Later illustrations should not convert those omissions into a standard alien appearance.
The HUMCAT source trail leads through Flying Saucer Review, volume 17, number 2, to the Rio newspaper O Dia of September 10 and 11. A separate published chronology gives September 6 at approximately 9:30 p.m., while the Atlas ledger carries September 9 at 1 p.m. These date and time differences remain unresolved. The plate consequently uses September 1968, preserving the reported beach, craft and helmeted figures without presenting one conflicting timestamp as certain.
