Case description
An elderly woman in Webster, Massachusetts, reportedly watched an unusual object pass her window in June 1947. The account describes an apparent size comparable to the Moon and a slender figure inside whose clothing resembled a naval uniform. Some later versions say the occupant was seated and that the observer was about seventy. No landing, conversation or taking is described.
Isabel Davis and Ted Bloecher traced the story to the Worcester Daily Telegram of July 7, 1947, page 1. Their 1978 discussion used June 19. Martin Kottmeyer and other retellings give June 17, while the case has also circulated under June 10. Patrick Gross’s source comparison preserves these differences; the original newspaper page has not been inspected for this record.
Later catalogue accounts say a relative telephoned the newspaper on the woman’s behalf, making the surviving narrative an indirect report. The uniform comparison concerns the alleged occupant, not the civilian witness’s occupation. Gross suggests an aircraft, possibly a helicopter, or a hoax, but the reviewed material does not establish either. The plate uses month-level dating and reconstructs the window observation, with the object’s engineering and people’s likenesses explicitly illustrative.
