Case description
At about 1 a.m. on May 20, 1969, José Pereira Sacramento was awakened by a sound outside his home in Vila Operária, Nova Lima, Minas Gerais. He initially thought someone might be interfering with his motor scooter; chickens had recently been stolen from the yard. The scooter was still there, but his dog Lassie was barking in the backyard. Going to investigate, Sacramento saw a bright circle of light moving over the ground like a searchlight. Above it, a luminous object was descending toward him in silence.
Sacramento said he wanted to call the others but found himself unable to move or speak. The object came down beside him and he felt pulled through an opening. A small elevator appeared to carry him upward into a brightly illuminated room with circular walls and a curved ceiling. He estimated the room’s diameter at about forty-five feet, close to fourteen metres.
Inside, he described six short beings, approximately three-and-a-half to four feet tall, arranged in two rows around narrow cylindrical devices. Each device had a curved plate and a lever-like control. The figures had large heads and eyes he compared with Japanese eyes; close-fitting, transparent-looking cream garments obscured much of their faces and bodies. They spoke among themselves in short, high-pitched sounds that he could not understand. He remained immobilized until one figure operated a control. The room became progressively brighter, and he lost consciousness.
His next recollection was waking in bed. His wife remembered him going out but had fallen asleep and did not see him return. Sacramento reported inflamed eyes and difficulty focusing for about a month, a painful shoulder, and lightheadedness and poor concentration for roughly a year. The catalogue records six hours of missing time; the fuller retelling does not establish the interval precisely. Preston Dennett’s account attributes the reported experience to the Brazilian SBEDV Bulletin.
