Case description
The Houston Post of 9 July 1947 printed an anonymous telephone claim about a supposed encounter the previous day in the Acres Homes district outside Houston. A merchant seaman said a large silver disc landed in front of him while he was walking. A small figure, about 2 feet tall with a round head compared to a basketball, allegedly emerged.
According to the story, the little man shook the seaman’s hand, climbed back into the disc and departed. The item supplied no reliable clothing, facial description, craft measurements, duration or corroborating witness. Its conspicuously humorous presentation is a central part of the surviving evidence, rather than a detail to remove from a modern retelling. Later catalogs preserved the event as an occupant report despite the absence of a developed investigation.
Isabel Davis and Ted Bloecher discussed it among the 1947 newspaper stories in their historical survey. Patrick Gross considers a journalistic or witness hoax probable, though the accessible record contains no documented confession resolving exactly how the item originated. A Project SIGN paragraph about an airborne observer and reflected sunlight has also become associated with this Atlas entry; it describes a different observation and provides no explanation or corroboration for the seaman’s handshake story.
