Imjärvi encounter — January 7, 1970

On January 7, 1970, woodcutter Aarno Heinonen and farmer Esko Viljo were cross-country skiing near Imjärvi in southern Finland. In a snowy clearing late in the afternoon, they heard an unusual humming or buzzing and saw a luminous object descend toward them. The men described a small disc or flattened object hovering above the clearing. A shaft of light extended downward through mist or vapor. Within it appeared a short humanoid figure wearing a greenish one-piece suit and a dark helmet or head covering. Accounts describe unusually large eyes and a dark device or box held near the figure. The apparition lasted only moments. The light, figure and object then vanished or departed rapidly. Heinonen reported numbness, weakness and later illness; Viljo also described physical aftereffects, though less severe. Medical observations established that the men complained of symptoms, not what caused them. Investigators interviewed both witnesses and examined the snowy location. No device or unambiguous physical trace was recovered. Later stories associated with Heinonen became increasingly elaborate, and some researchers questioned whether those claims should be allowed to reshape the original two-witness incident. The Atlas treats the January clearing encounter as its own record. Environmental effects, unusual light, illness, misperception and fabrication have all been discussed. The brief duration, snow glare and later development of the testimony limit certainty. CE3 is retained because both men reported a visible humanoid associated with the hovering object. The portrait shows the shared outdoor scene—the two skiers, snowy forest, hovering object, beam and short figure. It does not visualize later contact claims or imply that the reported symptoms prove radiation exposure. It is an illustrative reconstruction.
