At approximately 7:40 p.m. on September 22, 1971, a motorist near Itaperuna, Rio de Janeiro state, reportedly experienced a failure of his car’s operation during an encounter with a saucer-shaped object. Later case treatments identify him as Paulo Caetano Silveira; some retellings give September 23 rather than September 22.
The preserved account describes a taking involving small humanoid occupants and an interval of about three hours. It also records temporary blindness associated with the experience. The short digest does not give a complete order for every action inside the object or explain precisely how the motorist left it.
The reported vehicle disturbance, missing interval and temporary visual impairment form the outline of this first Itaperuna episode. Later reports involving the same man include a separate encounter near Bananeiras in November 1971.
