Case description
Tom Yates and Glenn Schiller were parked near Waikerie’s golf course at about 11 p.m. on 14 December 1971, watching for unusual phenomena, when they reported an extraordinary form roughly twenty metres away. It was approximately six feet tall, with a lumpy, mist-like humanoid body. Its brown head resembled a long-snouted dog with pointed ears, but they discerned no eyes or mouth. No legs were visible as it floated through the trees.
The men then drove approximately three hundred yards toward the course and saw a separate half-dome-shaped object, described as comparable in size to a truck or semitrailer. Windows or lights ran around its rim, and searchlight-like beams pointed upward. They watched this object for about fifteen minutes, after which it reportedly dissolved over approximately ten seconds. The overall experience was estimated at half an hour.
Keith Basterfield’s South Australian catalogue attributes the account to investigator John Burford. The animal-like apparition and the luminous half-dome belong to successive observations at different positions; the witnesses did not report seeing the form board the object. The labelled plate combines these phases for context, retaining the legless mist body and avoiding invented eyes, clothing or a demonstrated occupant relationship.
