Case description
A French-language teacher and her husband Michel, a music teacher, were camping in friends' terraced garden at Saint-Jean-du-Gard on 9 August 1972. Around 02:30, she stepped outside and noticed an unusually luminous, white, microcar-sized shape in a residents' parking area below. She initially interpreted it as something like an Isetta car and wondered why it appeared so bright in the surrounding darkness. Hearing footsteps in dry grass, she turned.
Only three or four metres away, she allegedly saw a matte-black form about 1.2 metres tall. She described a rectangular, block-like body, thirty to forty centimetres thick, with an oval head and two white circles at eye level. No mouth, nose or arms were visible; grass concealed whatever supported it. It remained motionless. An overwhelming fear, which she felt came from the form, drove her back into the tent. Michel saw her frightened reaction but did not go outside or see the figure himself.
A student friend recorded their account, and Jean-Paul Guguen later arranged a France-Inter broadcast and interview in February 1974. The earlier recording and later interview differ on the brief observation's duration. The witness also acknowledged that she connected the figure with the luminous object only afterwards. Pressed grass near the tent was considered inconclusive, and no trace was found in the parking area. The reported freeze in nature was her impression, rather than measured paralysis or proof of an entity's powers.
