Case description
Irene Granchi’s report in the September–October 1972 APRO Bulletin describes a sighting shortly after midnight on August 11 in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro. Amanda Domenech was resting beside an open window while her husband was in another room. An orange light she initially mistook for the moon became a large elliptical metallic object hovering over the nearby university campus.
She described a broad orange band, lighter oval openings, and a swaying motion. Two smaller objects emerged and circled it. Shapes resembling three or four occupants were suggested behind the openings, although the report explicitly stops short of a positive identification. A bluish light repeatedly entered her room; she felt powerfully drawn toward it, held on the settee, and unable to call her husband. The sequence lasted approximately ten minutes.
The smaller objects returned beneath the larger one. Her husband then reached the window and reportedly saw the departing object oscillating toward the Sugar Loaf–Niterói direction. She reported eye irritation for a day or two. The contemporary article describes an immobilizing or hypnotic feeling during the observation, rather than a documented hypnotic regression, an onboard episode, or established missing time. The original publication dates the incident to 1972; a later timeline gives 1971.
