Case description
At roughly 10:10–10:15 p.m. on October 28, 1972, Uruguayan Navy corporal Juan Fuentes Figueroa went to check the generators at the Isla de Lobos lighthouse. He reported unusual lights and returned to his room for a handgun. Approaching again, he described an overturned-bowl-shaped object on the terrace surrounding the lighthouse, with a ring of coloured lights.
Fuentes said three hooded, humanlike figures were beside the object, one taller than the others. When he raised his weapon, he felt unable to fire or move normally. The figures re-entered the object, which rose and accelerated away over the sea. His four colleagues were elsewhere during the encounter; they went outside afterward and did not witness the reported craft or occupants.
CIOVI investigated the case in 1973. Investigator Milton Hourcade later proposed a Hughes 500 helicopter interpretation in a 2005 reinvestigation, supported by fellow original investigator Germán Vázquez. Carlos Ferguson subsequently disputed that explanation. The case therefore includes both the single witness’s detailed account and a substantial disagreement among its investigators.
