Case description

Middelburg postal employee Gert Pretorius reported an unusual light while driving with his family toward town on the Graaff-Reinet road at about 8 p.m. The episode is usually dated November 17, 1972. The January–February 1973 APRO Bulletin prints 1973 in its heading, amid a series of 1972 reports, so that discrepancy remains visible rather than silently asserting a flawless chronology. Pretorius said his wife drew attention to a ball of light over Ouberg, approximately half a kilometre away. It descended to hover roughly three metres above the ground. He described two man-shaped, red-luminous forms about one metre tall alighting and apparently carrying a flashlight. The glow illuminated the hillside. The light then disappeared and reappeared in the sky, after which he drove to Middelburg and reported the experience to police. Later humanoid catalogues add rucksack-like equipment and say another observer, Koos Coetzee, saw the object but interpreted the apparent figures as supporting legs. That difference prevents treating every observer as an independent occupant witness. The illustration follows the distant-view account, placing representative members of the Pretorius couple beside their car with a small bright sphere and two unresolved red forms on a far hillside. Exact faces, clothing and extraterrestrial identity are not established.
