Case description
This entry refers more precisely to Tarcienne, in the province of Namur, where Lucie Vandervoort reported lights on March 20, 1973. Closing her chalet’s shutters, she saw an intense white light approach from the southwest, pass near the roof, turn, and head east. She subsequently described a succession of similarly moving objects. Accounts differ on their number, distance, height, and the observation’s starting and ending times.
Vandervoort examined the lights through a heavy brass trench periscope belonging to her late husband. She interpreted something inside a bright window as a thin human figure in shiny clothing, with one arm raised and another near controls. Other notes describe a figure making friendly gestures. She also took a photograph with a Voigtländer Vitoret camera. The photograph does not show an identifiable occupant; published versions were sometimes cropped or inverted.
Vicente-Juan Ballester Olmos and Wim van Utrecht revisited the testimony, optics, image, and local setting in Belgium in UFO Photographs. They found substantial reasons to distrust the occupant interpretation, including instability and possible optical artefacts in the periscope. Their analysis favoured ordinary aircraft for the moving lights and a blurred streetlamp for the photograph. They acknowledged uncertainty about the precise 1973 lamp installation. This is an argued conventional explanation, rather than proof of a deliberate hoax. The plate therefore shows a disputed optical interpretation without turning it into a detailed alien portrait.
