Case description
In 1975, a Portland couple identified in Preston Dennett’s retelling as Darryl and Toni took a three-day camping trip to the Owyhee River area of eastern Oregon. They planned to visit an archaeological site, water-ski and enjoy the wilderness. The programme introduces their encounter as occurring in September but subsequently calls the trip a summer outing; no exact date is established.
Driving home, they stopped beside a creek to cool off and let their pickup’s overheating engine rest. Darryl removed his shirt and noticed a silent aircraft resembling a B-52 bomber; Toni compared it to a supersonic jet. They then found themselves looking at a shiny silver object on the ground in the nearby valley. Neither discussed it, and they returned to the truck. Although normally difficult to restart when hot, its engine started immediately and the temperature gauge registered cold. On reaching home, they were approximately two hours later than expected. Memories of the aircraft and silver object were already fading.
Over the following months and years, Toni reported increased psychic abilities, while Darryl experienced severe depression and difficulty keeping his mechanic’s job. After hearing researcher Terry A. Hartman on a talk show, they contacted him about the unexplained interval. The following approach, boarding and interior details came from several later hypnosis sessions, rather than a continuous account remembered at the roadside.
Both then described feeling entranced and walking toward the silver craft, Darryl ahead. He recalled touching a surface like Teflon, finding an octagonal opening with rounded corners and climbing a ladder that seemed to appear. Toni remembered watching him ascend before finding herself inside a small dark room with lights on its walls. Through an opening she saw Darryl strapped by his arms and legs to a table in a white, curved-walled room. An instrument hung above him; nearby stood small chairs and a table. Through a round window she recalled seeing darkness, clouds and then Earth from space.
Toni described two hairless humanoids with dark-grey wrinkled skin, small features, no visible ears and dark-grey uniforms. Their audible buzzing accompanied a perceived mental reassurance: they intended no harm and had not expected her to follow. They scanned Darryl with a narrow light beam and pulled his injured elbow, causing pain. Darryl recalled the painful pulling and its rapid relief but said he could not open his eyes to see the beings. He said an old right-elbow injury had previously prevented full extension.
Afterward, their recollection resumed at the truck. Darryl later claimed that his elbow had healed and his depression lifted; both interpreted the experience as benevolent. He associated his distress with the contrast between the beings’ perceived love and humanity’s troubles. During the period of hypnosis sessions, Toni also reported waking to a bedroom visitor who gave the name Ahab.
