Case description
The Sanary-sur-Mer story is assigned to 12 August 1975 at approximately 9:30 p.m. A witness identified as J. P. M. Brassen allegedly saw an oval object emerge from the sea near the beach. An oval opening was visible. Orange beams reportedly dazzled him for about fifteen minutes, followed by a shushing or whistling sound from the shore.
Two small forms were then seen moving in short jumps. The catalogue describes them as frail, approximately seventy centimetres tall, each with three legs and an apparent shell or protective covering. Brassen fled. Another rendering describes the object landing on the beach rather than only emerging from the water. Neither version supplies a usable facial description, colours of the bodies, vehicle dimensions or a witnessed departure.
Patrick Gross traces the account to Eric Zurcher’s catalogue in Lumières dans la Nuit 195, May 1980, citing personal information from ufologist Michel Moutet. The underlying witness communication and any investigation are unavailable. Gross therefore considers invention possible; that is a critical assessment, not proof of a confessed hoax. The three-legged forms should be retained as the specific claim, while broader theories about alien biology cannot be established from this poorly documented account.
