Case description

Jacques Vallée recounts a peculiar visitor to Lois’s Café in Happy Camp, California, early in1976. The database’s February1 date should not be read as a securely established day: its underlying description says only early1976, while the fuller narrative places the incident in winter. Vallée learned of it during his investigation of the town’s wider collection of unusual reports. Two women identified as Helen and Pat were reportedly eating at different tables when an unfamiliar man entered. The account describes pale skin, an unusual shirt without a coat despite the season, and a persistent, strained smile. He ordered a steak dinner but seemed unable to handle the knife and fork. He also reportedly tried to drink gelatin dessert from a glass and eventually left without paying. Later writers grouped the anecdote with Men in Black stories, but the described visitor was not dressed in a black suit and no official identity, threat, alien anatomy or craft was established. Apparent unfamiliarity with food is not proof of non-human origin. Nor can the town’s other accounts of lights, beings or alleged abductions be inserted into this restaurant encounter. The record preserves what patrons reportedly told an investigator, with an imprecise date and no independent physical evidence recovered here. Its plate depicts the café anecdote as a human-scale scene, without inventing a spacecraft outside the window.
