Case description
Early on May 11, 1976, Mrs Kent was walking through Higher Fold, Leigh, on her way to work when she noticed a stationary silver figure on a landscaped former slag heap. Jenny Randles’s contemporary report in Awareness places her first observation at about 6:15 a.m.; Hatch rounds the time to 6:20. The figure appeared approximately normal human height and remained conspicuously still.
Kent described a shining outfit with a cloak, broad sleeves and pointed lapels, together with pointed headgear compared to a Viking helmet. Glare prevented a clear view of the face. Beyond the crest she could see part of a spherical silver object, its lower portion hidden by the slope. On passing again roughly five minutes later, she reportedly saw a light beam directed down the hillside. By a later pass, around 6:40, both figure and object were absent; she did not observe their departure.
The partial sphere’s apparent height should not be treated as a measurement of its complete size. Randles’s illustrated investigation supplies considerably more detail than the abbreviated database entry. Although Hatch attaches a hoax-related classification, the short entry does not explain its basis or document an admission. The report therefore retains that catalogue qualification without presenting a demonstrated hoax as an established outcome.
